Just east of Fairbanks is North Pole, Alaska. Many years ago, a clever Mayor of a small suburb of Fairbanks decided to rename his town North Pole. His plan was to be a year round Christmas Community. There was a large, Christmas gift shop and the visitors center was a quaint, sod-roofed building:


While Lyndi shopped, I made a quick stop at the North Pole Post Office to mail home a box of souvenirs, T-shirts and some clothing we didn't need. We used Priority Mail to lighten our load several times during the trip.

We pressed on to Fairbanks and visited the University of Alaska's Large Animal Research Station to see some of the animals that are being studied and returned to the wild:


Here is a reindeer and a musk ox, an almost pre-historic looking animal:
